Which application created the damaged recording?
Xbox Game Bar
Gameplay clip stops or will not open
Press Win + G and open Gallery, or check Videos > Captures for the saved MP4. If Windows shows 0xc00d36c4 or the clip freezes, test that complete original in another compatible player before choosing repair.
Check picture and playback →NVIDIA / ShadowPlay
Highlight has missing sound or an abrupt end
Open the NVIDIA recording gallery and locate the saved highlight in its output folder. Test the original at the same timestamp in another player. A frozen saved clip may need repair; a replay buffer that was never saved has no file to submit. For missing voice, check the recorded audio tracks.
Find the saved highlight →Zoom / meetings
Local recording has not converted
Find the meeting’s local recording folder and finish conversion in Zoom. If it still contains only .zoom files, follow Zoom’s conversion workflow first. Once MP4 or M4A exists but will not play, select that saved file for repair. Keep all original meeting files together.
Understand the saved session →OBS Studio
Crash, power loss or interrupted output
Check Settings > Output for the recording path and format. If the MKV plays, try remuxing for your editor; if the original itself fails, follow the OBS repair path.
Open OBS recording repair →CAPTURE PROBLEM ≠ DAMAGED FILE
Was the content recorded in the first place?
Recording source: game window
Black frames were saved
Never captured
If every copy shows a black game window but the overlay is visible, inspect the capture source. If the recorder saved black frames or never captured the microphone, change the capture settings for future sessions; file repair cannot create those missing scenes.
Playback stops here
Recorded content, playback interrupted
Saved, but cannot play correctly
Play the complete local copy in another compatible player and seek to the failing timestamp. If the same freeze or opening error persists, try repairing that original. If the second player works, fix the first player’s decoding or compatibility instead.
Error 0xc00d36c4: check the player before repairing
The code alone cannot distinguish unsupported encoding from damaged media. If the same original plays and seeks normally in a compatible player, change the playback setup. If the complete file repeatedly fails at the same point across compatible players, repair is a relevant next step.
Start with the saved screen recording →WHEN A LONG RECORDING ENDS TOO SOON
The session lasted two hours. Why is the file shorter?
01
Duration is missing or clearly wrong
Keep the large original. If a compatible player cannot seek through it, repair can inspect the media and timing that remain. A short conversion is not a better repair source.
02
Recording stopped at a disk-full event
Look for the last file written by the recorder and any adjacent segments. Repair may make saved data readable, but it cannot add the unsaved remainder of the meeting or game.
03
The original is complete; the export is short
Return to the original and check the export range or application conversion. If it plays to the expected end, repair is not the first step.
Only the meeting audio is damaged? M4A is a separate audio file and contains no video picture.

Screen Recording Repair FAQs
If a recording file was saved and contains usable media, repair may help with damaged playback information. Keep the original and check the result. A replay that was never saved cannot be repaired as a file.
Open the original in another compatible player and seek to the same timestamp. If the picture appears, troubleshoot the first player’s decoder. If only the game is black while overlays remain visible, check the capture source. File repair may help unreadable picture data, but it cannot replace black frames that the recorder actually saved.
Find the original in the NVIDIA recording gallery or the output folder configured in the app. Compare the same moment in another player. If the complete local copy still will not open or freezes at a fixed point, submit it for repair and save the available result separately. A temporary buffer that was never saved is not a repairable video file.
This repair path is for supported exported files such as MP4 or M4A. A .zoom conversion file is outside this page’s supported input and needs the recording application’s conversion workflow.
Use the dedicated OBS recording repair page for the differences between traditional MP4, MKV and Hybrid formats, and for deciding whether to remux or repair.
Distinguish a decoder freeze from frames dropped during capture. Check a second player and the original recording around the same moment. File repair may help damaged playback information; it cannot recreate game frames that were never recorded.
No. It processes an existing video file. Capture settings, game crashes, GPU problems and microphone permissions require separate troubleshooting before the next recording.
M4A is accepted as a separate audio file. Use the saved audio original, or open Audio Repair for an audio-focused workflow. M4A cannot restore the video picture or a microphone source that was never captured. Complete any unfinished Zoom conversion in Zoom before selecting the resulting M4A.
Not necessarily. Keep the full local recording and try a player that supports its codec. If it plays and seeks correctly there, address player compatibility. If the same original cannot open in compatible players or repeatedly stops at the same timestamp, try file repair. The error code alone does not establish corruption, and repair cannot restore scenes that were never captured.
Review the allowance, preview and saving conditions shown by the online service before processing. Downloading the desktop installer is separate from its repair and saving license.
