RECORDING STOPPED. KEEP THE ORIGINAL.

OBS crashed. What kind of recording did it leave?

A gaming session, livestream archive or tutorial may fail at a different stage: capture, finalization or playback. The file type changes the next step.

OBS recording output settings showing format selection

Check the format used for this session

In OBS Settings > Output, check Recording Path and Recording Format. Find the file from the failed session; changing the format now affects only future recordings.

OBS MP4 will not open after a crash

01

OBS MP4 will not open after a crash

The recording has a file size, but the player cannot read its duration or start playback.

CHECK FIRST

Check the Recording Format used for that session and test the original, not a converted copy.

WHEN TO TRY REPAIR

An ordinary MP4 remains unreadable after interruption and still contains saved media.

Recording stops at the same timestamp

02

Recording stops at the same timestamp

A long gaming session freezes partway through, or the displayed duration does not match the session.

CHECK FIRST

Seek to the same point in another compatible player and check whether the disk filled up.

WHEN TO TRY REPAIR

The saved file fails consistently; repair may make remaining media readable but cannot extend past the recorded endpoint.

OBS remux failed

03

OBS remux failed

MKV to MP4 remuxing stops, or its output is shorter than the source.

CHECK FIRST

Play the source through the failing point; select a different destination with enough free space.

WHEN TO TRY REPAIR

The source itself also fails. If only the output fails, resolve the remux or editor issue first.

It plays, but will not import

04

It plays, but will not import

A Hybrid MP4 or MOV opens in a player, while an editor rejects the file or an audio track.

CHECK FIRST

Test the original in a compatible player and check the editor’s format, codec and audio-track support.

NEXT STEP

If the recording plays fully, address import compatibility first. Consider file repair when the saved original also has playback errors.

REMUX OR REPAIR?

MP4, MKV and Hybrid formats need different decisions

MP4 / MOV

Ordinary recording interrupted

A crash may leave playback information unfinished. Keep the saved original; converting an unreadable source cannot supply the missing index.

If the original cannot open, try repair.

MKV

Readable recording, incompatible editor

Use OBS File > Remux Recordings, choose the original and a separate output. If it completes, check the new file in your editor.

If remux fails, check source playback and destination space.

Hybrid MP4 / MOV

Fragmented recording with a finalization step

Hybrid MP4 arrived in OBS 30.2; Hybrid MOV in 32.0. Test the saved file before treating an interrupted session like ordinary MP4.

A readable file rejected only by an editor needs compatibility checks first.

In VLC, use Audio > Audio Track to try the recorded tracks. An editor may show desktop sound and microphone on separate tracks. If you find the voice there, select or mix that track; if it was never captured, repair cannot add it.

OBS Recording Repair FAQs

Sometimes, when usable media remains in the saved file. The recording mode matters: traditional MP4, MKV and Hybrid MP4 do not behave identically after an interruption. Preserve the original and check it before choosing remux or repair.

Play the source in a compatible player and seek near its end. If it plays fully, use File > Remux Recordings in OBS with a separate destination and enough free space. If the remux completes but the editor still rejects it, check codec support. If the source itself stops at the same point or has no readable duration, use the original for repair. Remuxing cannot add footage that was never saved.

The player may not be able to read the timing or index information, or the write may have ended unexpectedly. File size alone does not establish how much video can be recovered. Check the playable range and the saved original.

OBS introduced Hybrid MP4 in 30.2 and Hybrid MOV in 32.0. These modes write recoverable fragments and finalize the container differently from ordinary MP4/MOV. Check the mode used for the failed session, test the saved original and follow OBS guidance. A readable file rejected only by an editor may need remuxing or codec support rather than repair.

In VLC, open Audio > Audio Track and try each recorded track; in an editor, inspect all imported audio tracks. If another track contains the microphone, select or mix that track. If OBS never recorded it, changing settings now or repairing the file cannot add the missing speech.

Keep the original recording as the repair input. Conversion requires readable media and may create a shorter output or leave out a track. If the original already plays correctly, remux may be the right compatibility step instead of repair.

Review the allowance, preview and saving conditions shown by the online service before processing. Downloading the desktop installer is separate from its repair and saving license.

Recording stopped in a crash
"My PC crashed just after the final round, and the OBS MP4 would not open. After repairing the saved file with Fixo, I could use the winning play in my highlights edit. That moment was the reason I had recorded the match."
A local OBS recording was not finalized when the computer stopped. The match footage remained in the file; the creator used desktop repair for the long recording and checked the key sequence.
