Photoshop File Repair Online Free: Fix PSD & PSB Files
Repair PSD and PSB projects that will not open or report an unexpected end-of-file error. Check the available image content and whether editable layers or only a composite image remain, then save a separate copy.

PROTECT THE WORKING FILE
PSD will not open—or only its preview survives?
01
Photoshop unexpected end of file
A project from several days of work suddenly will not open and reports an unexpected end-of-file error.
CHECK FIRST
Keep the saved original unchanged and compare it with an earlier backup or complete source copy.
WHEN TO TRY REPAIR
The PSD or PSB still fails to open. Repair can work only with project data that remains in the file.
02
Not a valid Photoshop document / cannot parse the file
Photoshop rejects a downloaded or transferred project before the canvas opens.
CHECK FIRST
Confirm the actual format and get a complete copy from its source. Renaming an image to .psd does not create a Photoshop project.
WHEN TO TRY REPAIR
It is a genuine PSD or PSB and only this complete project remains unreadable.
03
The picture opens, but layers are damaged
A preview is visible, but you cannot continue editing the layers needed for delivery.
CHECK FIRST
Inspect the Layers panel, not only the visible image. Compare text, masks and objects with an earlier version.
WHEN TO TRY REPAIR
Saved layer content is unreadable. A composite image alone does not establish that editable layers survived.
04
One project fails, or several?
Several projects fail, or a large PSB triggers a “scratch disks are full” warning.
CHECK FIRST
Open a known healthy local project. If several fail or a scratch-disk warning appears, check Photoshop, free space and the storage connection first.
WHEN TO TRY REPAIR
Other projects open, but one complete PSD or PSB still fails. If an export looks normal and only the canvas is wrong, check display or GPU behavior first.
WHAT YOU NEED TO RECOVER
Editable layers and a flattened image are different outcomes
A TRAVEL JOURNAL
Take the long way.
Stories from the road
Show or hide an element
Editable-layer illustration. A flattened image cannot switch these elements independently.
Layered output
Inspect the layers you need to edit, masks, text and smart objects. A file opening is only the starting check.
Composite output
A merged image may preserve visible artwork without editable layer data. Treat it as a separate, limited deliverable.
Some layers survived, but the project is incomplete
Keep the recovered working copy separate. Reuse the editable text, masks or objects that are actually present, and compare them with any earlier project. A full-looking composite can help reference the design, but cannot stand in for missing editable layers.
TRY THE AVAILABLE RESCUE PATHS
Choose the next step after a failed Photoshop save
An earlier project version
- Check an existing backup or available version history for the same project.
- Open a copy and compare the most recent edits before continuing.
WHAT THIS GIVES YOU
A starting point for the next draft; recent changes may still need rebuilding.
Photoshop closed unexpectedly
- Reopen Photoshop and check whether it offers a recovered document.
- Save any usable recovery separately. If none is available, keep the last saved original and backups.
WHAT THIS GIVES YOU
Recovery depends on what was saved before the interruption; it is not guaranteed.
A scratch-disk error appears
- Keep the original. Make space on Photoshop’s configured scratch disk and for a separate output.
- Try a known healthy project to distinguish a software or storage problem from one damaged PSB.
WHAT THIS GIVES YOU
Address the working environment first. Renaming PSB to PSD does not make the file smaller.
Only a compatible composite opens
- Follow Adobe’s composite-recovery instructions on a copy; compatible composite data must already exist.
- Save a usable image separately as a proof or a visual reference for rebuilding.
WHAT THIS GIVES YOU
A flattened image does not contain the original editable layer structure.
How to Use Photoshop File Repair in 3 Steps
Select the original, run repair and save the available output. Screenshots show the shared file repair workflow.
MADE FOR YOUR FILES
Use the saved artwork to keep your project moving
Save the available result separately. Use the content that opens to continue the project, prepare a proof or locate the pieces that need rebuilding.
WORK WITH INDIVIDUAL OBJECTS
Change the headline. Keep the photograph.
The text selection on the canvas matches the highlighted layer on the right. Each object remains separate in this illustration.
Continue editing what remains usable
If the actual saved file retains editable layers, you can work with those layers in Photoshop.

Photoshop File Repair FAQs
Use the saved original or an earlier backup, not an empty resaved file. An unexpected end-of-file error can follow an interrupted save or incomplete copy, so compare a fresh local copy first. If the same project still fails, try repair. Content that was never written into the project cannot be reconstructed.
That depends on the surviving layer data and actual output. Check layers individually. A composite image or embedded preview is not equivalent to recovering the editable project.
Keep the existing file and check AutoRecover, backups or previous versions. If no healthy version is available, use a copy of the damaged PSD or PSB for repair.
This page focuses on the structure and readable content of PSD and PSB project files. Photo enhancement and retouching are different tasks from repairing a damaged design file.
The preview may remain readable while other project data is damaged or unsupported by the software. Check compatibility and inspect the actual full-resolution and editable output.
Yes. If an exported copy looks normal while only the Photoshop canvas is wrong, investigate display or GPU behavior. Keep the PSD and compare the saved file in another compatible application before deciding it is damaged.
No. The extension does not change the file structure or its size. Keep the original PSB and use a workflow that accepts it. After repair, verify dimensions, visible content and any editable layers separately.
If Photoshop reports a scratch-disk error or several healthy projects also fail, address the application’s working space first. Keep room for the original, repair output and Photoshop temporary files. If only one complete PSB remains unreadable while other files open, try file repair. Renaming it to PSD does not reduce its size.
Check where the file came from and whether its extension matches its actual type. A renamed JPEG or incomplete download is not made into a PSD by changing the name. Obtain a fresh original or open the real format in a compatible application. If it is a genuine, complete PSD or PSB and only this project keeps failing, try project-file repair.
Review the allowance, preview and saving conditions shown by the online service before processing. Downloading the desktop installer is separate from its repair and saving license.
