Older shoots deserve the same attention
EOS 5D / 6D, 80D / 90D, Rebel or PowerShot G: start with the original photo or movie. The RAW format varies by model; choose the actual CR2, CR3 or CRW file, not a thumbnail.
Model names help identify the source. Repair availability depends on the actual format, recording mode and remaining file data; the list is not an individual model test certification.
01 / CANON RAW & JPEG
CR2 or CR3 will not open—even though the thumbnail looks fine?
An embedded preview and the full image are different parts of a photo file. Seeing a thumbnail is a useful clue, not proof that the RAW data will decode.
CR2 / CR3 will not open on the computer
Use a current version of Canon DPP or an editor that supports your exact camera model. If the complete photo opens there, an unsupported decoder may be the problem.
If the same area is damaged in another reader
Compare a fresh copy from the card. Persistent gray areas, truncated content or color blocks are reasons to inspect the original file for damage.
Inspect the full image after repair
Zoom into the affected region, check dimensions and open the saved output in your photo workflow. A JPEG preview alone does not confirm editable RAW recovery.
CR2 / CR3
Full-resolution image
Embedded preview
Look inside the image, not just its thumbnail
Local damage illustration
Same scene, readable image
Illustrative comparison from existing sample assets; not a measured Canon repair result.
Thumbnail visible
An embedded preview can survive even when the full RAW cannot be decoded. Open at full size in a reader that supports the camera.
Full image available
Compare resolution and the previously damaged area. A usable rendered image can help delivery without proving the RAW structure is intact.
RAW editing needed
Check the actual saved type and RAW controls in your editor. CR2/CR3/CRW input support does not establish an editable RAW output.

02 / CANON MOVIES
The last take has a file size, but will not play
Battery loss or an interrupted write can leave an MP4 or MOV unfinished. Keep the camera original and compare another copy before assuming the entire take is unusable.
No duration or no playback
Check whether playback information is incomplete; file size alone is not a recovery estimate.
Black image, freezes or missing sound
Try a compatible player and inspect the original at the same position. Keep all available audio tracks.
A reference is requested
Use an existing healthy clip from the same device and recording settings. Do not overwrite the problem card to create one.

Recording stopped and left a DAT file?
DAT is a supported input format. Keep the original filename and card copy, then use Video Repair for the existing recording. A zero-byte file or a DAT with no recorded video data cannot supply missing footage.

Which Canon file needs repair?
The camera gallery identifies your equipment. Use this table to choose the right original for photo or movie repair.
| File group | What it contains | Accepted input | Before repair |
|---|---|---|---|
| RAW photos | Camera image data and an embedded preview | CR2 · CR3 · CRW | Try a reader that supports the camera model. Keep the full RAW, not a thumbnail export. |
| JPEG photos | A rendered still image | JPG · JPEG | Compare a fresh copy if the image is truncated or has gray or colored regions. |
| Camera movies | Recorded picture, sound and timing | MP4 · MOV · CRM | Use the full-resolution recording. CRM requires a compatible RAW-video application. |
For photos, use the RAW or JPEG original. For a movie, use the original recording; a thumbnail or proxy is not an equivalent input.
FROM CARD TO EDIT
Did the original fail—or only the copy?
01
Keep the card contents
Retain folders and adjacent clips. Avoid new shooting on a card with missing files.
02
Make a complete copy
Check size and transfer completion using a stable reader and connection.
03
Test in the right app
RAW decoding, movie playback and editing compatibility are different checks.
04
Repair the saved original
If the copied original still fails, use it as the repair input and save elsewhere.

Canon File Repair FAQs
CR2, CR3 and CRW are supported inputs. First try the full original in a current Canon DPP version that supports the camera. A visible thumbnail may come from the embedded preview while the full image data is unreadable. Repair can attempt to recover available image content; inspect the actual saved file before assuming the RAW editing controls or original RAW structure were preserved.
The copied file may be incomplete, or the computer software may not support the recording format or codec. Compare the original and copied files and try compatible software before assuming the source recording needs repair.
Yes. This page brings Canon photo and video file repair into one entry point. Choose the original supported file; photo checks and video checks are explained separately below.
No. Renaming an extension does not decode or repair image data. Use compatible RAW software for healthy files and a repair workflow for files that are actually damaged.
A zero-byte file contains no original media to rebuild. Look for the camera original, another complete copy or a backup. Missing or deleted files need a different recovery process.
Choose by the actual file, not just the camera badge. This page accepts CR2, CR3, CRW, JPG/JPEG, MP4, MOV and CRM. Camera series and recording mode help identify the source, but a model name alone does not guarantee that every damaged recording can be repaired.
Canon Log describes a tonal recording curve, not a file extension. CRM is a Canon RAW movie file. Keep its recording settings and use a compatible video workflow; CR2 and CR3 belong to the still-photo path on this page.
File repair starts with an existing file. If the original is missing after deletion or formatting, recover it from storage or a backup first, saving recovered files to a different drive. Then assess any recovered file that is still unreadable.
DAT is on the supported repair-format list. Keep the original DAT and the surrounding card files, then use the general Video Repair workspace for the recording. Do not rename it to MP4. DAT is used by different applications, so support for the extension does not mean every DAT contains readable camera video. The Canon photo/movie selector above focuses on CR2, CR3, CRW, JPEG, MP4, MOV and CRM.
First open a complete copy in Canon DPP or another RAW application that supports the camera model. If the full image opens there, update or change the original viewer. If it remains unreadable or shows the same missing region across compatible readers, try CR2 repair with the original. Keep the card copy; a thumbnail alone does not confirm the full image is intact.
Review the allowance, preview and saving conditions shown by the online service before processing. Downloading the desktop installer is separate from its repair and saving license.
